I think one of the central messages of the New Testament is that it's
better to be godly (spiritual, in the best sense) than to be religious,
if it has to be one or the other. I think the ideal is both, but the
foundation needs to be the condition of one's soul, not just the actions
of one's body. Without the spiritual foundation, what we do is nothing
more than "dead works".
I also think this is reflected in the emphasis in the LDS Church on "becoming" over "doing" over the last decade or so.
