It's a mixed bag, and we need to acknowledge that to begin to understand the big picture, I believe. 

I just want to point out the danger of describing others in judgmental terms while railing against those who are judgmental. I see the "protection" promise as spiritual, not physical.  They are powerfully symbolic to me, however, and I absolutely love the concepts of:1) Being reminded constantly of the covenants I have made - the basic ones of the temple that I think are important and powerful. That simply isn't found in ANY other Christian tradition - period. I want my kids to grasp that concept, even if my own perspective is slightly different than what often is taught in church.

It applies to the Church, as an institution, and it applies to each individual in the Church, as well. (See the allegory of the vineyard in Jacob 5 for a good description of that concept.)
